Mobbed by fans at the BevHills Cheesecake Factory, DWAYNE “THE ROCK” JOHNSON – 6-foot-5, 260 pounds – heard a SCREAM as he mistakenly stomped a waiter’s foot!

Said My SpyWitness: “Johnson apologized like crazy, but the waiter insisted he was fine.

“After signing for fans, The Rock asked a waitress, ‘Is that guy I stepped on okay?’ She replied he’d gone home
“After signing for fans, The Rock asked a waitress, ‘Is that guy I stepped on okay?’ She replied he’d gone home because he’d been limping a bit.

“Instantly, Johnson handed over 200 bucks for the guy’s lost wages – and even left his number in case of medical bills!”

This is a big year for Dwayne Johnson, the wrestler-turned-actor formerly best-known as “The Rock.” San Andreas, a disaster blockbuster in which he stars, arrives in theaters on Friday. Ballers — an HBO series in which Johnson serves as both executive producer and star — premieres in June. Furious 7, which stars Johnson in a supporting role, was the biggest movie of the year by a massive margin — until the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

But don’t feel too bad about a superhero blockbuster taking Johnson’s number-one box-office slot; he’ll make his own, long-discussed superhero blockbuster debut in Shazam!, which is part of DC Comics’ big plan to establish its own Avengers-style universe. Johnson is so perfectly suited to the superhero genre that he was actually offered his choice of two starring roles in Shazam! — the titular superhero or his antiheroic adversary, Black Adam. Johnson chose Black Adam, reasoning that the role was “inherently more interesting.”

Johnson is absolutely right about Black Adam — but given the same choice, it’s hard to imagine many other actors passing on a top-line superhero role in favor of his less famous counterpart. This is the kind of thoughtful, measured approach to stardom that has turned Dwayne Johnson into a household name. The secret to Johnson’s rise to global fame as an actor over the past 15 years is simple: He’s consistently been the best thing, by far, about a bunch of otherwise middling movies.

Johnson’s filmography is unusually eclectic, pivoting sharply from one movie to the next: big action movies to wacky comedies, weird indie movies to fun little cameos, often playing himself. The only unifying trait is that every role seems to have been carefully chosen to show off another aspect of his talent. Johnson’s turn as the villainous Scorpion King in 2001’s The Mummy Returns was so much more interesting than the rest of the movie that it spawned an entire spin-off series repositioning his character as the hero. 2005’s Be Cool — a Get Shorty sequel that absolutely no one was asking for — only comes to life when Johnson pops up on the screen. He steals the show from Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway in 2008’s all-but-forgotten Get Smart reboot.

Coming in the wake of a downbeat Memorial Day weekend at the box office, Warners’ disaster pic San Andreas is looking to send a few jolts through the multiplex as it eyes an opening at around $40 million or more.

In contrast, Sony’s romantic triangle Aloha, the weekend’s other new wide opener, is hoping to establish a foothold in the marketplace so that it can settle in for a lengthy run. While some analysts are betting the movie could open in $12-15 million territory, more cautious prognosticators are pegging it for an $8-10 million opening.

With Disney’s Tomorrowland, which opened to an underwhelming three-day figure of $33 million last weekend, expected to downshift into second place, the road is open for San Andreas, which harkens back to the old Irwin Allen disaster flicks of the ’70s, to easily claim the top spot. Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a helicopter pilot called upon to execute multiple knick-of-time rescues, the PG-13 movie will bow in 3,777 theaters, the majority of them 3D houses. Warners and Village Roadshow co-financed and co-produced the $110 million production, from Warners’ New Line unit.

San Andreas teams Johnson with director Brad Peyton, who also guided the actor through 2012’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, and producer Beau Flynn, who produced both Journey 2 and Johnson’s 2014 Hercules. Lost’s Carlton Cuse penned the screenplay, from a story by Andre Fabrizio and Jerry Passmore. Also appearing in the film are Carla Gugino and Paul Giamatti.

Johnson is coming off Furious 7, about to hit the $1.5 billion mark worldwide, in which he was part of a pumped-up ensemble. San Andreas will be a test of his current muscle as a leading man, who’s shouldering the entire picture himself. His recent outings, like Journey 2 and Hercules, opened to $27.3 million and $29.8 million, respectively, so the action star looks to top those numbers.

Queensland’s rescue helicopter service CareFlight has come to the aid of thousands of people over the years — but no-one like Hollywood hero Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

The service’s crew was instrumental in giving the wrestler-turned-actor the training needed for his role as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot in the film San Andreas.

The film, which was shot in south-east Queensland last year, has been released in Australian cinemas today.

“We’re really excited about the movie and the publicity it will give our lifesaving work in Queensland,” CareFlight chief executive Ashley van de Velde said.

“The movie makers also made a kind donation that has gone towards buying lifesaving equipment for the not-for-profit service.”

In preparation for the role, Johnson was put through CareFlight’s rigorous training program on helicopter safety, winching and rescue procedures by experienced CareFlight air crewman Ben Trollope, who was also on standby during filming as an adviser.

“It was very important to the film producers and Dwayne Johnson that the helicopter rescue sequences were based on real-life mission procedures,”Mr Trollope said.

“I spent two weeks with Dwayne going through the techniques and one of our most experienced pilots did the same.

“Dwayne was one of the nicest people I’ve met and incredibly dedicated to getting the rescue procedure right.”

Director Brad Peyton said CareFlight were crucial to the film.

“Dwayne and the film crew wanted the action in the helicopter to be authentic and CareFlight and its crews have been fantastic,” Mr Peyton said.

“We really appreciate and respect the experience and standing CareFlight has in the rescue community.

“We were learning from the best.”

Dwayne Johnson in Furious 8, Possible Spinoff As Well If there was one complaint with the otherwise bombastic and satisfying Furious 7, it was that Hobbs AKA Dwayne Johnson, wasn’t in it enough. Originally he wasn’t going to be in it at all due to scheduling conflicts with Hercules. But after the untimely death of Paul Walker, production was delayed and Johnson was able to join the film in a supporting and memorable role.
But with Walker’s death, someone has to step in to help lead the franchise with Vin Diesel. Why not Johnson? It would certainly rekindle the cop vs. criminal dynamic that Diesel and Walker had in the first and fourth Fast & Furious movies and Johnson’s overall presence in the franchise definitely helps future business.
At a recent press conference for his new film San Andreas, Johnson confirmed he would be in Furious 8 saying, “Of course. It can’t go on without Hobbs.” In addition to returning to the Universal series, Johnson also answered questions regarding a possible spinoff movie involving Hobbs.
“We all are interested in it. I just had a big conversation with the studio. So we’ll see,” said Johnson. “I still think for me personally we’ve created a little bit of space for him in 7 and the gauge is set for what the audience will want. That’s my take on it, you know, but a lot of other people have to have input.”
A Hobbs standalone film would make sense for Johnson because when you think about it, he doesn’t really have his own signature franchise. He came into both Fast & Furious and G.I. Joe and other than those franchises, he hasn’t really led a major blockbuster to success. Hercules underperformed and San Andreas will be an interesting barometer for how well he can lead a major film.
There’s no question he has the talent and charisma to do it. It’s just a question of audiences clicking with one of his solo movies. I’m hoping San Andreas does well so we can see not only a Hobbs movie, but a sequel to my favorite Johnson movie; The Rundown.
